Surface Treatments

Like other forgings, several types of surface treatment can be applied to copper forgings, such as shot blasting, pickling, electroplating (silver painting, tin plating, chrome plating, nickel plating, ect) and polishing, ect.

Surface Treatment of Copper Forgings

Shot Blasting

Shot blasting is the cheapest surface treatment type that commonly used in both forging and casting processes. For copper forgings, the most common media in shot blasting process is steel shot. The finer the steel shot, the smoother the surface will be. Compared with other surface treatment ways, shot blasting is the most economical and fastest surface treatment method used in copper forging process.

Pickling

Pickling is a metal surface treatment used to remove impurities, such as stains, inorganic contaminants, rust or scale from copper forgings. Hot closed die forging process that occur at high temperatures leaves a discoloring oxide layer or scale on the surface of copper forgings. In order to remove the scale the forged copper part is dipped into a vat of pickle liquor, so as to eradicate the scale from the surface.

Electroplating

Electroplating is the process of applying a layer of metal to copper forgings using the principle of electrolysis. Electroplating is a kind of surface processing method in which the cationic ions of pre-gold-plated in the plating solution are deposited on the surface of copper forgings through electrolysis with the substrate metal as the cathode in the salt solution containing pre-gold-plated, forming a plating layer. We can divide electroplating for copper forgings into silver painting, tin plating, chrome plating, nickel plating, ect.

Polishing

Polishing is the surface treatment method that can supply best shining copper forgings. As it is manual operation and quite costs time, so the cost of polishing copper forgings is higher than other surface treatments.
